It's a tough thing, missing the NBA postseason. Tough in terms of disappointment on the part of players, coaches and fans, sure. But we're talking more literal here -- missing the playoffs is a mathematically tough thing to do. There are 30 teams in the league, and 16 go to the playoffs. Fourteen do not. In theory, then, it is harder not to make the playoffs than to make it.
